About Me

As a composer and musician

I have always loved playing music.  From a young age, I would try and pick out tunes on the piano we had in our house.  From age 7 I started to take piano lessons, then later also started violin and bagpipe lessons.

I love playing and performing on the bagpipes, at celebrations and private and public functions.

For me, there is also a huge sense of fulfilment from composing tunes and musical arrangements and seeing others connect and respond to them.

My compositions tend to range across a mix of musical genres to fit the specifics of the project brief.  I have written for film, online media content and commercial projects.

I also love accepting commissions to compose traditional tunes and arrangements for weddings and other special occasions.

But, WHO am I?

As well as a musician and composer, I am also a very lucky husband and dad.  My wife and I have a young family and we live in Ayr near the superb Ayrshire coast.

Aside from music, I love to enjoy the great outdoors.  I like hillwalking and running to keep fit, and have recently got into paddleboarding which gets me out on the sea and local lochs and find its a great way to recharge.

When I was younger, it was always my dream to write and play music professionally.  However, from school I went to study law and for over 10 years, until recently, I worked as a full time lawyer in private practice and local government.

In the midst of the pandemic, and after a lot of re-evaluation, I decided with the support of my family that I should follow my passion and chase my dreams.

My bagpiping background

I started taking lessons to play the bagpipes when I was 10 years old.

After a year or so I joined my local juvenile pipe band, the Vale of Atholl and continued to learn under the expert instruction of brothers Ian and Gordon Duncan.

For anyone that may not know, it is no exaggeration to say that Ian and Gordon’s skill, genius and vision together transformed modern piping around the world, on the pipe band, solo and folk scenes.  Just have a listen to what the Vale was recording nearly 35 years ago!
